I Forgot to RubAnd you ask what was it that I meant to rub. The meat! The meat! Come on ladies and gents, we are discussing cooking. (With that opener? I think you missed a few leading words.) From past tales told, cooking is not one of my fortes especially when I miss reading the directions or neglect to add some ingredients. (Oh you’ve never done that before.) I have wired my brain to stitch, not to cook. My views are the same as the one sample we have in the store - “Only dull women have immaculate houses”. In this case, one could say—”Too much emphasis placed on food”. (It’s usually the case that food is required to live. Stitching simply enhances life.) As in the past, Easter is at my house each year and I do my best to exceed the previous year’s experience. Be it good or bad. (Can you all tell where this is going?)This year, my future son-in-law is up from Dallas and the last time I cooked we had burnt shoe leather which reminds me of my mum and cooking. Is there a genetic trend here with cooking? (No. I don’t burn things that often.) Back to Easter dinner and I do not know what to cook for 8 people. The afghan stitch group helps with suggestions. These girls are fantastic cooks especially Jan who went to baking school. ‘So Michelle,’ Jan says, ‘Throw some olive oil on the griddle, add Montreal Steak spice, heat the oil and throw on the pork tenderloin on the HOT griddle to sear the meat. Then bake the meat in apple juice until done. To keep the pork moist, cover the dish with Saran wrap and then add tin foil over top.’ As I am writing in large letters on scraps of memo paper, pages of notes are everywhere on the table, I question the melting of the Saran in the oven. Me of little faith especially as I cook a lot. Brenda backs up Jan’s theory and Brenda can cook. So I put my notes under a magnet on the fridge and add apple juice and steak spice to my grocery list. Within a 3 day span with my bits and bobs of scrap paper, I was at 4 grocery stores and even hit one 3 times. Thursday night was a hit and the roast beef was so tender but I neglected to make the Yorkshire pudding as we started to eat after 8 pm rather then the ETA of 7 pm at the table. Good Friday, Chris, Terry and I do priority cleaning, and I start to cook after I have done some stitching. I get those withdrawal symptoms if there is no daily fix of stitching. That’s why I have projects strategically placed throughout the house and store. Back to cooking. Suddenly I realize that in 2 hours I am going to be feeding the group and I am way, way behind in my schedule. So I take the pork tenderloin and throw it in the casserole dish, drown it in apple juice, do the Saran and aluminium foil thing, and into the oven to cook. Did we notice a missing step here? I discovered the error of my ways, 3 days later when I was removing bits of paper from the fridge door. However dinner was still a success measured by the lack of leftovers. Or was it the 3 desserts and 2 fruits which made it palatable... Now that my time out is over, back to the real important stuff—stitchin’ and more stitchin’.
