Construction Time Again...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, not snow or love but for construction. (Does anyone else get a sense of impending doom?) It is the best thing in life. And that includes chocolate and anything else you might think is better. Except now I need to find new assistants. Or to tell the truth—fresh guinea pigs. Child labour refuses. Don’t know why. We do get along. Sort of. (Sorta. Kinda. Maybe. I’m not crazy enough to agree with any of her plans right off the bat.) Who else is available and understands how my mind works. Perhaps my brother. What will it cost me? Well he is willing but I need to make the stuffing for the Christmas bird. Okay, I will cook in exchange for hanging up slat wall. What size of toggle bolts do I need? Three trips to Home Depot and it was not a pleasant time. Especially trying to use the self serve checkout. I still shudder at the thought.

Now picture this. Saturday afternoon, child labour and I clean out the bookcases of persian yarn and move three cases to the centre of the store after we roll the cases of Appleton yarn. (You’ll noticed I got roped into this anyhow.) We discover that the 4th case is attached to the wall and is the correct size screwdriver in the store. Not! My solution—we’ll deal with it tomorrow. The rolling cart containing the Caron is heavy and slightly tipsy. Have those threads been into the Christmas spirits?

Bickering between Chris and I continues on at home. The stuffing gets done but it is not my best work. I am counting on my sister-in-law who is the chef to come to the rescue. I was only asked to make the stuffing. Perfection is over rated. (I will not comment. I am behaving.) My brother arrives at the store and we discuss how and where to start. In the end, my suggestion regarding the toggle bolts works except for one tiny detail. The size he told me to buy is too large and so I am off to Home Depot on Dec. 24th. Guess what, no people shopping and I am back to the store in 20 minutes. Using the proper size toggle bolts has the slat wall up in a flash.

As we stand back and admire our work, I put my hand in my pocket, and ask what the extra screw is for. (This is the same screw she claimed the box it came in was shortchanged. Uh huh. She won’t talk about it now.) Never mind, after wiping down the slatwall, the silk ribbons take up residence and are now proudly displayed in their beautiful colours. Next year’s installation of slat wall is going to be a snap.

What's New

Just arrived is Inspirations #53. Contents of the magazine include stumpwork, gift wrapping ideas plus the front cover contains a needle case covered with embroidery stitches. What I love about the magazine are the very detailed pictorial instructions. Displayed on my new slat wall is 4mm and 7mm silk ribbon from River Silk. Plus Trenway’s 3.5mm Silk Ribbons in delightful names such as “Aussie Green”, “Glacier Lake” and “St. Thomas”. Plus there is an exciting series called the Canadiana Collection. Each card of 3.5mm ribbon has 6 colours of 5 yards each and retails for $24.98. Thinking of stitching something for Mom for Mother’s day? Check out Victoria Sampler’s latest letter which is “M for Mother”. Or you could stitch something smaller from Victoria Sampler’s latest chart “Blue Carnations”. We have the newest hearts for the International Series — Korea, Sweden and now Greece. You know the saying what is old is new again. Why not check out old petit point designs from Louise Gregoire, Babs Furhman, Jean McIntosh or Alice Godkin. These smaller designs are great and fast to cross stitch as there is no backstitching or fractionals. Mirabilia’s has “Lady of the Mist”.
