SURVEY SAYS......

Just as I am getting comfortable in my jammies and that glass of wine by my hand, the phone rings. Am I interested in doing a survey? Wow, they are asking for my, MY, opinion. As the saying goes, it was not a wise decision. Here, I thought I could be vocal and opinionated. Ha! Wrong again. On and on the questions fly as the answers are to be "On a scale of 1 to 10" or "How would you best describe...". They expect me to remember the beginning of the question and to respond with an answer. Pleaseee. At my age I am lucky to remember what I was going to do when I arrive at a destination without a Post It note attached somewhere on my body. Plus my answers are not in their list of options. Let me go! I have a newsletter to publish. The ladies are waiting to hear about my latest adventures in the world of increasing inventory. Like expanding to the DMC Tapestry wool. Okay Michelle, we now have the wool in stock but where are the canvases? Currently there are various counts of blank canvas. As for stamped canvases, the best were from Belgium. Flashback! Golden Threads started in November 1992. Everyone knows that Mother knows best, especially mine. Although she is gone, I fondly remember the fine needlework she created years ago when I was a young girl. Her remaining pieces are proudly displayed in my home. Her memory is a constant inspiration for enhancing Golden Threads. However, she is still to blame for my sandbox. My wonderful Christina had given Mum a Vervaco cushion kit as a souvenir of her travels to Italy. Remember only "Chrissy" could impress my mother. Then Mum had to have another cushion kit to do, exactly the same, big holes and all. And that is how Golden Threads began business with Belgium. Last month one of my early customers came into the store looking for those cushions for her mom who is a golden senior. The customer suggested stocking those cushion kits again. Our mums are experiencing decreased vision but still want to have busy hands. My eyes flash and the brain churns. Voila, fax to Belgium! Arriving soon? One has to remember, Europe operates at a different or slower pace than North America. Keep checking with us!

The BEST Night of the Week

Thursday night arrives very quickly every week. The stitch group rushes in for the latest and hottest topics. We now have a flasher in our group. At the Rockton fair, Gwen was a vendor selling her beautiful hand couturier childrens’ collection. As the barn was cold, Gwen needed to keep warm. How is your imagination doing? Brenda #1 stops at her table, Gwen rips open her coat and shows Brenda... Have you guessed yet? A GREEN garbage bag that is now worn as a dress. Holes for the head and arms. Around the table, heads shakes in amazement and in disbelief. Our Gwen? Joyce confirms Gwen’s actions as she was also flashed. The odd time Angela will show up pretending to stitch but all one has to ask "Any stories about your job?" and we are off in peals of laughter as she deadpans the incidents. Then Gwen will ask very innocently if any one has watched TV lately. Well, the other night it was all about Martha Stewart and her piping bag. Then we all talk about how Martha has influenced our cooking compared to our mothers. (Notice the main topic of this newsletter - food and mothers) It seems that every mother overcooked and boiled the meals to death. It did not matter what ethnic background - Polish, Hungarian, Dutch, Ukraine or Italian. But as we talking, all of a sudden the memories of past Christmases with the sweet baking aromas and the traditional dishes, has every one was comparing their favorites. When not out gallavanting with Gwen across the countryside, Lou continues to needlepoint her cats while Brenda #1 has not one but TWO projects on the go. We need to number some of the names as people join the stitch group with the same names. Currently the top favourite is Brenda which is up to number 3. Joyce who won the DMC floss chest last year, still has not wound up her bobbins. Everyone always asks about Christina, my university wonder. (If you are missing the lack of comments, it is because she is writing exams, and is more prickly than a porcupine.) Thank goodness she will be home only 3 days at Christmas and then off to party to welcome 2003. As she will tell everyone, her and I can only live together for about 1 week and then the next "Survivor" series AKA "Rizzato" begins. Before you know it, 8:30 has arrived and it is time to pack up and leave. Gwen always manages to ask everyone how many stitches did each person do that evening. And all because she is finishing a found UFO from the fifties, a large tablecloth which she is now embroidering with all the floss neatly located in labelled envelops rather than her usual pile of floss all tangled up and thrown together in the middle of the table. As Elly and I close the store, I just shake my head in amazement at how far we have come in such a short time. Blink an eye lid and Thursday night is here again.
