Flying Threads
Just An Opening Note
Boy, has this been a birthday celebration on my part. It is not often that one turns 50!!! I
compare myself to red wine (my favourite beverage - wine that is), as you mature, you only get
better. Thanks to all of you for your cards and thoughtful gifts (Christina, my wonderful
daughter who surprised me with the spring floral arrangement delivered on Good Friday - she has
finally learned to be organized to the point that she was a week ahead - way to go Chris. Or
Diane - she stitched a card on linen and the best part was Elly, who gave her the sample piece
from my secret stash. And then there is my little wonder Daniel who presented me with a big hug
and a small surprise. Elly and her family sent me a bouquet of red roses.) To all who came in and
entertained me at the shop. Currently I am busy trying to create a dried flower arrangement with
the stitch group’s directions. Am I successful? Check out the next newsletter, but first there’s
Mother’s Day, and I am a proud mother, even if I can’t cook. {*rolls her eyes* big surprise}

Finder's Keepers, Losers...
Have you been to the store lately? I have added more surprises... Needle Necessities, Gentle
Art. Love those specialty threads! The over dyeds - the colours - names like "April Showers"
and "Cherry Cordial". Let me tell you it has been difficult to pick and choose, I have made a
concentrated effort and I ordered in one of each. So much easier in the decision making process.
And then to see what has arrived - it’s like having Christmas every day.
P.S. Mark on your calendar- Christmas in July. (As mid year is fast approaching and if you want to make gifts for Christmas, better start now. One can discover quick and fast items to stitch in our British magazines. I am finding a large number of patterns to stitch. Not only are they fancy and use interesting stitches but they are FAST TO DO. A special gift for your friends or family.

? The Question Corner ?
From the question bag and this happens every time and all the time.
Q: What exactly is stripping?
A: Well now, I am not going into graphic details (you
need to come to Thursday Stitch nights if you want to hear about Viagra). Oh, that wasn’t the
question. Okay, each piece of floss contains 6 strands. The first strand of a pair is pulled out
individually as the remaining ones are left behind. Then the second one is pulled out and the two
are smoothed together and are ready to be stitched. Voilà, we’re off to the races! And there she
lies!

It's P-A-R-T-Y Time!!!
That is, until my curfew kicks in. Can you believe it??? I’m fifty and there’s been a curfew
imposed by a nineteen year old. So we stitched until midnight on a Thursday night. Andy and Eva
didn’t complain, and they’re the landlords. Who cares that Chris barely made it to school in time
{ Got into class just as the announcements started, huffing and puffing from RUNNING up TWO
flights of stairs} and then open the shop at ten, as Elly is trying to complete the wedding. I’m
having fun living and laughing. Thursday night’s topics range from Bill Clinton’s pants {or lack
of them} to Viagra to stripping {are you noticing a trend??? I should start censoring their
topics too!} to CFRB... and you thought they were tame! What do I know? {nothing!} Chocolates are
better than men, according to one Thursday night stitcher. { can anybody ID this person? *grin*
and it’s not me!!} No, I have not completed any of my projects {big surprise... and she complains
about MY stitching habits???}, but looked at what’s arrived in the store: glasses doing the
wave... off... on... off... on... off... on... {getting the idea?} yes, but we decided (a team
effort) { SOS!! SOS!!! ... - - - ... ...- - - ... }-}that’s morse code, btw} Hang up those
specialty threads. Shimmer, sparkle {sounds like a car’s getting cleaned and waxed — but not
ours! you could grow a full bacteria colony on the poor thing :( does this reflect personal
hygiene???} and I’m in love with over-dyeds {save me!!! someone... anyone???} So, how are we
going to attach those hooks? {think she’ll be successful... place your bets here! right here,
ladies and (occasional) gents!} Sarah... please ask your hubby, that wonderful woodman, what
epoxy do I use {ok, that is NOT my mother’s terms... who helped her?? c’mon... ‘fess up} to
attach painted metal to painted wood. {why am I getting visions of the store becoming a flaming
heap of twisted metal bits?? (don’t worry Andy and Eva... everything will be okay...
eventually...)} The store is under construction {like I said, don’t worry}. Going to move the
unsold kits back to the house (where am I going to sleep? Who cares?? Need room in the store). We
show the DMC perle cottons in the front, beads moved over to the wall, flower threads twirl on
the table (this is not a form of lap dancing gents) {can anyone tell where my mother’s mind
lives??}. Move the table, more room for new Thursday night stitchers {remember the curfew!!!}.
I’m exhausted and I haven’t even put up the new stuff! Charts, fabric... everything seems to be
back-ordered... {darn, she’ll have to control herself} Ah, but then there’s the website being
developed {another one of MY wonderful ideas :) } The domain name is www.gthreads.com, but the page isn’t up yet, so please be
patient.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye
We have more contests!!!!! {I am taking full credit for these ideas. I repeat, THESE ARE MY IDEAS, NOT my mother’s!}
"Because Mothers Are Special" Contest Breakdown
{I’m taking over the keyboard until further notice *evil grin*} Ok, this idea came from the fact
that I am now a not-so-proud owner of a roll of raffle tickets (ask Mother for the story). The
contest ends May 15, 1999. This is how I’ve set the prizes:
Grand Prize: One chart of your choice with all your
materials - these are defined as: the colour and correct size of fabric according to what you
want (for example, 32 ct Blue Ridge linen), all the floss, and any specialty items (ie. Kreinik
metallics, Mill Hill Beads, Over-dyed flosses, etc.) but this does not include Q-Snaps or a chart
holder.
2nd Prize: $100 off ONE Eva Rosenstand kit
3rd Prize: $50 off ONE Lanarte kit
4th Prize: 2 (in-stock) charts of your choice
5th Prize: Any size Q-Snaps (must also be in-stock)
6th Prize: Any 5 items up to $20 total for free (absolutely
NO going over $20 in any event)
7th Prize: 1 skein of Caron Collection threads (either
WaterColours, WaterLilies or WildFlowers)
8th Prize: One magazine of your choice
9th Prize: One large-sized fabric pack
10th Prize: 20 free skeins of regular DMC floss
The winning ballot will be drawn on May 15, 1999.If you have a dispute with any of these set
prizes... well... TOUGH. My contests, my rules, and Mother can’t overthrow my decision.
*grin* Oh, and with the prizes with money discounts, you CANNOT get the money you did not use in
cash. *smiles* I don’t mean to be harsh, but I have to watch out for Mother.
"Tribute to Father’s Day" Contest
Do you remember those guess-how-many-jellybeans-are-in-this-jar contests? Well, this one is set
up the same way, except it’s suited to us stitchers. There will be a jar filled with different
types of flosses. Your objective? To correctly guess the total number of items in the jar. When
the contest begins: May 26, 1999. When it ends: June 19, 1999. Mother and Elly will not know what
is in the jar, since I will be making it (so don’t even think of asking them anything). As stated
previously, these are MY ideas (yes, I’m being possessive of these ideas) and therefore I AM IN
CONTROL!!! *evil laugh* Prize Breakdown:
1st Prize: Person closest (either over or under) to
the correct number will get a $50 gift certificate
2nd Prize: Second person closest to the correct number will
get a $25 gift certificate
3rd Prize: Third person closest to the correct number will
get a $10 gift certificate
In the event of a tie, the people must answer one of any type of skill testing question.
Rules for both contests:
Any purchase under $15 will receive one ballot, and then for every additional $10, you will get
another ballot. For example, if someone spent $43, they would get 4 ballots - 1 for the first
$15, then one ballot for each $10. ($15 + $10 + $10 + $10; rounding up permitted).
*giving keyboard back to Mother now*

Happiness Is Being A Mother
... and hearing about Mary Ann’s first grandchild, a girl who will become a stitcher with Mary
Ann as a role model {save yourself!}. Edna who arrives every Thursday night to ask questions
{good!!! keep her busy, please :) }. Lately I’ve noticed she’s been arriving later to stitch with
THAT group {misfits, all of you ;-) }. Diane, who will finish the birth sampler, only three years
late {I can relate to that one, honest (the stitching, not the birth sampler)}. Joyce, the
constructive one who stitches while her daughter goes to school {start taking notes, mother}. Ah,
yes, the Wish Book. C’mon, ladies, tell those who care to make your page blank again. There are
also Gift Certificates. Anyone interested in summer classes? Then please let Elly or myself
know.
